Burton had his original family pet, Mica, a Shih Tzu. He accompanied Burton to each of his sporting competitions. On his passing, he was laid to rest directly behind home plate, at the home softball field he had spent so many Sundays. Burton subsequently returned to Mica’s breeder, Lorraine, and was able to start a new relationship with newborn Micah Goldstein, call name, M.G.
Once Shellie entered and became a permanent part of Burton’s life, they returned to Lorraine, and found a cousin of M.G.’s, a retired American/Canadian breed show champion, Merry, whom they renamed Goldie.
M.G. earned his UDX2 title, and qualified and competed several years in the American Kennel Club’s national championships for the sport of obedience. Competing at that level, with a dog breed born and bred, according to legend, to be the Emperor’s lap dog, Burton always felt that they were like the “Jamaican bobsled team” of dog performance sports.
M.G. was the runner-up for the first American Kennel Club’s Achievements in Canine Excellence Award, the coveted “A.C.E.” Award.
Burton and M.G., and Shellie and Goldie, performed pet therapy visits with National Capital Therapy Dogs, Inc. They also were certified teams deploying with HOPE Animal-Assisted Crisis Response.
M.G., fourth in Toy Dog Group, A.K.C. National Championship, Long Beach, California, December 2 & 3, 2006, and also runner-up for A.K.C. Achievements in Canine Excellence (A.C.E.) Award
